If you are no longer living in the country where you once resided as an ex-pat, would you go back there again? Why or why not?

Re: Would you do it again?
Thu, November 20, 2003 - 1:30 PMI would love to live in Saudi again, as crazy as that sounds. I loved living there. I made friends that I still talk to almost every day, while living there. I wouldnt mind going back to Germany or Japan, but its a little cold there, for my liking.

Re: Would you do it again?
Tue, December 2, 2003 - 11:49 PMI went back to visit Budapest and Belgrade in September...I felt right at home and loved every minute but I'm focusing on stability and settling in one place now - not the bohemian expat dream.
The time for being an expat in the former East bloc has, in my opinion, come and gone. Expats who were still in Budapest seemed to be in a state of justifying their existence there. My time there had a very specific context - the post-communist gold rush. The region was in need of Western assistance. Now that most of the countries are about to join the EU, it's more difficult not to feel like a bit of a parasite. Belgrade, on the other hand, needs expats to invest and bring in some fresh ideas. Go and help make Serbia feel welcome in the global community.
Personally, I'm waiting for Iraq to eventually quiet down to a point where I can volunteer safely with an international organization....studying Arabic now in preparation. -

Re: Would you do it again?
Wed, December 3, 2003 - 10:01 AMYou make a strong point Jennifer. My ex husband and I lived in St. Petersburg close to 6 years. He stays on in Russia (in Moscow now) indefinetly. But in the time we lived there, we've seen expats come and go. I too believe that once you've served your purpose, move on. He seems to be milking it for all its worth. Not sure I agree with him (one of the reasons he's an ex).
I commend you on your next project, best of luck to you.
By the way, if you're interested, come join a few of us (small group for now) in "Hungarian Rhapsody", where we share stories big and small of all things Hungarian.... Unicum (yum), makosz tekerch, the dances and culture and the like.
