I moved back to the States again two years ago from Serbia. I can't stand it here. I wonder -- how can a person make a break for it without any money and/or waiting job? Surely there's a way!
Those wishing to defend the US -- please, I've heard it all before. I know, I'm the worst human being who ever lived. There, I saved you the trouble.

Re: I wanna be an expat again!
Wed, July 21, 2004 - 8:06 PMI've been trying to ex-pat again too. Lately, living here has been driving me insane.
So what were you doing in Serbia? -

Re: I wanna be an expat again!
Thu, July 22, 2004 - 1:06 AMInitially working on a movie. Later moved back to work on a novel.
Man, getting out of here is like trying to break out of prison! -

Re: I wanna be an expat again!
Thu, July 22, 2004 - 11:35 AMYeah, LA especially'll do it to you! At least the weather's not oppressive up where you are. If I could move back to NYC I might not feel this way but that's way too expensive at this point. But even NYC has changed considerably since Guiliani. The corporate mindset in America is unrelenting! -

Thu, July 22, 2004 - 11:36 AMWait a minute, sorry, I had it backwards, you're in LA yourself now. Yes, then you know exactly what I mean. -

Re: I wanna be an expat again!
Thu, July 22, 2004 - 1:50 PMOh I do indeed. I'm actually a native of LA, but I left when I was 18 and spent time in the Bay area and a year long stint in Madrid, along with a few of over-a-month long backpacking trips.
The ironic part is that now that I have moved back, it almost seems that I have experienced more culture shock than any other place I have lived and been. It's strange, but I feel like a bigger stranger in the city that actually gave birth to me. -

Re: I wanna be an expat again!
Fri, July 23, 2004 - 4:03 AMI know what you mean. When I was a kid we got a dog we had spayed. I remember when she got back from the vet she was weirdly kind of frozen, reacted to everything in slow motion. That's how I've been since I moved back to LA two years ago. My first trip to Serbia I couldn't wait to get back, too many things to attend to, my life was here, not there, but within 24 hours I wish I'd never returned. The second time I went back, for only three weeks, I literally got teary-eyed as I was walking over a bridge in Belgrade the next day. I find America a very numbing, paranoid place. I only feel completely alive when I'm out of it. It's terrible to have to say as much but that's how it is.
